Cancer

<

Cancer is the second largest cause of death in the United States and it is one of the most devastating diseases that humankind suffers. Every year many people are diagnosed with Skin cancer, Breast cancer, Lung cancer, and Mesothelioma cancer (associated to blue asbestos exposure). Advances in cancer research have resulted in a substantial progress to improving ability to detect very small tumors and to identify rapidly growing tumors.

This increases the potential to treat cancer more effectively and to reduce cancer mortality. New options to prevent, and treat cancer are the focus of care providers in oncology, hematology, radiation therapy and internal medicine.

These projects include clinical research to evaluate new drugs, novel treatment strategies for different type of cancer, and basic research to better understand the complex biology of cancer.

Description of cancer:

Cancer is diagnosed in more than 1 million people every year in the U.S. alone. Cancer is a group of more than 100 different diseases. Cancer occurs when cells become anomalous and keep dividing and forming more cells without order or control. Normal cells have a limited number of divisions before they die, perhaps around 50. The reason is that cells have telomeres -repeated DNA sequences- that shrink with each cell division, and kill the cell when they run out.

Some cancer cells do not have shortening telomeres, and synthesize their own enzyme telomerase that extends the telomeres, making cancer cells live forever. Not all cancer cells have this property. All organs of the body are made up of cells. Normally, cells divide to produce more cells only when the body needs them. If cells divide when new ones are not needed, they form a mass of excess tissue called a tumor.

Tumors can be benign (not cancer) or malignant (cancer). The cells in malignant tumors can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Cancer cells can also cut loose from a malignant tumor and travel through the bloodstream or the lymphatic system to form new tumors in other parts of the body. The spread of cancer is called metastasis.
