Breast Cancer

Each year, 182,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and 43,300 die.One woman in eight either has or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Male breast cancer is rare. Less than 1% of all breast carcinomas occur in men. For men the mean age at diagnosis is between 60 and 70 years, though men of all ages can be affected with the disease.

If cancer is detected early, the five-year survival rate exceeds 95%. Breast self-exam should be part of monthly health care routine. Women over 40 are at a high risk for the disease, and should also have an annual mammogram and physical exam by a doctor. Mammograms are among the best early detection methods, yet 13 million U.S. women 40 years of age or older have never had a mammogram. A complete early detection plan also includes regular clinical breast examinations by a trained medical professional.

Description of Breast Cancer

The breast is made up of lobes and ducts. Each breast has 15 to 20 sections called lobes, which have many smaller sections called lobules. Lobules end in dozens of tiny bulbs that can produce milk. Thin tubes called ducts link the lobes, lobules, and bulbs. Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant cells (cancer) form in the tissues of the breast that begins in the cells of the ducts. The cells in the breasts usually grow and then rest in cycles similar to all parts of the body. Genes in the cell’s nucleus control the periods of growth and rest in each cell. The nucleus is like the control area of each cell. When genes are in good working order, they keep cell growth under control. But when genes develop an abnormality, they sometimes lose their aptitude to control the cycle of cell growth and rest.

This most common type of breast cancer is called lobular carcinoma and is more often found in both breasts than are other types of breast cancer. A woman’s probability of developing breast cancer increase, as she grows older; 77 percent of breast cancers are found in women over the age of 50. There are several types of breast tumors. Most are benign; that is, they are not cancerous. These lumps are frequently the consequence of fibrocystic changes, which can cause breast swelling and pain. Cysts are fluid-filled sacs, and fibrosis refers to connective tissue or scar tissue formation. The breasts may feel lumpy and sometimes there is a clear or slightly gray nipple discharge. Benign breast tumors are abnormal growths, but they do not spread outside of the breast and they are not life threatening.

Inflammatory breast cancer is an uncommon type of breast cancer in which the breast is warm, red, and swollen. The skin of the breast may also show the rough appearance called peau d’orange (like the skin of an orange). The redness and warmth occur because the cancer cells block the lymph vessels in the skin.

Cancer has the potential to break through normal breast tissue barriers and spread to other parts of the body. Although cancer is always caused by a genetic “abnormality” (a “mistake” in the genetic material), only 5–10% of cancers are inherited from mother or father.

Some Physicians are using digital mammography, a technique that enables radiologists to generate an image of the breast in about five seconds and to refine the contrast of the image so that lesions can be seen more clearly. A biopsy –a procedure to remove some cells from the suspicious area, will be performed by a doctor, when breast cancer is suspected so they can be examined more closely. Radiation therapy is offered to breast cancer patients to rid the body of any microscopic cancer cells that may remain near the area where the cancer was originally found. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women age 40 to 55, and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths, after lung cancer.
